Looks like I haven’t revised in 8 days. There’s a big reason for that.
We moved closer to Phoenix for Mother Hen’s radiation therapy. We arrived late Sunday night. Her first treatment was Monday morning. We’ve been running to get set up again ever since, plus get used to a new schedule.
None of us are accustomed to going out every day. It’s exhausting for all of us. Yes, I know I used to do this when I still had an outside day-job, but you know what? I was continually exhausted then, too! I guess I’m just naturally a home-body who does better when working with her natural rhythms. 😛 This weekend we’ll all be doing a lot of sleeping and resting to recover.
As for the revision? Last night it felt great to get back to it! In fact, I stayed up later than I should have because I got on a roll. I will definitely need a nap later today. The story is going really well with some parts needing no work at all. One by one I’m getting through the points of the revision notes.
Notable issues in this section:
For some reason, I spelled the name of a new character three different ways in the space of one scene. Oops!
At one point a character was with the group. The next moment she was across the room. I knew how the character did it, but apparently when I was writing the first draft that little part didn’t get down into the document! This sometimes happens with me. My brain moves through the story so fast that my poor little fingers can’t keep up.
A scene sequence I thought would be rough because of how much work it took to write it wasn’t so rough! In fact, it read through pretty great! When I find spots like this I remember what long-time authors say: how you felt when writing a section doesn’t necessarily equate how good or bad the end product is. I’ve found that to be so true for myself. Typically how much work, or how much I agonized or struggled with a section, typically has no bearings at all on how good or bad it is at the end. To be honest, I think this is a great thing! It means I just need to write the stupid scene already. 😛
The end is within sight!
